Cohearo / Get started

Getting started

Five steps from a free account to your first transcript.

1. Create a free account

Cohearo starts with a free account. The app itself is downloaded from your dashboard after you sign in, not from a public download page — signing up comes first.

2. Download from your dashboard

Once you're signed in, your dashboard offers the build for your operating system. Cohearo ships for macOS, Windows and Linux; a mobile app exists for Android and iOS in early access.

3. Install for your OS

  • macOS — install the app bundle.
  • Windows — run the Inno Setup installer.
  • Linux — a .deb package for Debian-family distributions, or an AppImage for everything else. Linux has a hard glibc 2.38+ floor; see Supported platforms for the exact distribution list before installing on Linux.

4. Your first recording

The first time you record, Cohearo asks to download its on-device transcription model (about 640 MB) — accept the download once, and it's cached for every recording after that. If your microphone permission isn't granted yet, the app walks you through enabling it for your OS before recording can start.

Press the round record button to start. A live timer and a waveform confirm the app is actually hearing you, and a small dot pulses when it detects speech. Press Stop when you're done, or Cancel to discard the recording outright — canceling can't be undone.

5. Where your transcript goes

As soon as the transcript is ready, Cohearo copies it to your clipboard automatically, so it's ready to paste wherever you need it. The recording also lands in your Timeline, grouped by date, where you can open it, search it, or file it into a folder.

Whether anything else happens to it depends on the mode you picked when you signed in: On-device keeps everything — audio and transcript — on that machine only; Cloud transcribes and diarizes on-device the same way, then syncs the finished transcript (never the raw audio) to your account. See On-device vs Cloud for the difference in full.
